The Village of Oxford New York

The Village of Oxford is 1.2 square miles, located within the Town of Oxford, in the heart of Chenango County, New York, United States. The former Chenango Canal (1834 to 1878), now Route 12, once passed right through the village, connecting the community to Utica and Binghamton. This is a neighborhood of beautiful homes, an historic district, friendly people, several churches, a great school, and six well-kept parks. You'll know you have arrived when you see the Village's grand, hand carved blue and gold welcome sign that marks the entry to the Village.

The Village has an abundant, rich history and has lots to offer residents and visitors alike including walking tours of historic homes in many architectural styles such as Greek Revival, Gothic, and Queen Anne. The Oxford Village Historic District includes 201 buildings and seven contributing structures. Among the notable buildings are the First National Bank of Oxford building (1894), the James Clarke House building (remodeled 1914), the Baptist Church (United Church of Oxford, 1824), and the Gerritt Van Wagenen house (1824). There's even the home of famed bridge builder, Theodore Burr, now the Oxford Memorial Library and Theodore Burr Covered Bridge Resource Center.

Municipalities across the state were tasked by the EPA to do a lead and copper service line inventory of their water system. The village of Oxford water department completed its service line inventory and the results are available at this link.

The Village has convenient shopping for everything from antiques to hand crafted items. The casual and friendly Village has restaurants, pubs, art and craft galleries, a museum- rich with local history and artifacts, a folk music center, 6 On The Square, that has some of the best, big name, performers anywhere. For the outdoor enthusiasts, the Chenango River, which meanders right through the Village, provides sport fishing, and there's golf at our own Blue Stone Golf Course.

In the heart of the Village is LaFayette Park, a central hub, where people can stroll under big shady trees or gather for events. The spring Arbor Day ceremony, the summertime Farmers' Market and Community Band concerts, the winter Holiday Tree Lighting, are just some of LaFayette's happenings. Just to sit by the beautiful, two-tiered, Cole Memorial Fountain will make you feel like you're stepping back in time. This elegant cast iron fountain was given to the Village on July 17, 1884, and each spring it gets a fresh coat of paint to maintain its beauty and longevity. At the eastern end of the Park is a classic Greek Revival Band Stand that was originally built in 1875 and rebuilt in 1917 by Fred Tracy. The Oxford Garden Club maintains flowering plants around the fountain, the Band Stand, Washington Park, and the Library. Promote Oxford Now (PON), another volunteer organization, provides hanging baskets, planters, and decorative banners around the Village.

Throughout the year, the Fort Hill American Legion Post #376, provides a Sunday Community Breakfast, occasional fundraising dinners, and chicken BBQs. There's even an annual "Ice Breaker" on the last Friday in July for Oxford Academy High School alumni to start celebrating the Blackhawk's reunion weekend. The Legion organizes a patriotic Memorial Day parade in spring and a Veterans' Day service in the fall.
